Hey everyone! I wanted to pass along some information about the current issue between Walgreens and Express Scripts.
There are over 250,000 military personnel, family members, retirees, and others who are members of the Department of Defense Tricare pharmacy benefits program. Express Scripts is the pharmacy benefits manager for Tricare, and they currently have some business disputes with Walgreens. Unfortunately, Express Scripts has refused to separate the Tricare business from it's other disputes. Express Scripts’ rejection of Walgreens offers means that Tricare’s nearly 6 million beneficiaries (including some U.S. Military families) will no longer have in-network insurance coverage for prescriptions they fill at Walgreens and Duane Reade pharmacies.
I would imagine that the Tricare customers are feeling extremely frustrated - Walgreens has so many convenient locations, and these families are now being told to use a different pharmacy. The last thing these military families should worry about is having to transfer prescriptions and find a different pharmacy.
Only patients with certain prescription insurance plans managed by Express Scripts are impacted. It is best to check with your local Walgreens pharmacist to find out for sure if you’re impacted. Patients also can check the back of their prescription insurance card – if it has Express Scripts’ name there, then you may be affected. If it doesn’t say Express Scripts, then you are not affected.
